Vasto is an Italian municipality with some 40 thousand inhabitants, in the Province of Chieti and in the Region Abruzzo. Its roots date back to the 5th century B.C. when the ancient population of Frentani settled near the Gulf of Vasto. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it passed through centuries of decay recovering only under the Spanish rule. In Vasto the second theatre of the Region was established and the city was the hometown of the well-known painter Gabriele Rossetti. Nowadays it is a lively and prosperous city, active in the tourism, fishing and industrial sectors.
