Descrizione:
Eboli is one of the largest cities of Campania Region, a southern Italian town of 39,264 citizens in the province of Salerno. Eboli is mainly known thanks to the book "Cristo si è fermato ad Eboli" written by Carlo Levi.
The city was founded on the slopes of Monte D'oro. The territory is for 90 flat, composed of the the alluvial plain of the river Sele. The remaining part of hills and mountains, falls within the regional park Picentini.
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the discovery of a Neolithic mummy.
Rich in archaeological remains in different sites located over the hills (there are many funerary findings dating from the Eneolithic and the Bronze Age), in Eboli there was, in later centuries, the presence of Villanovan Civilization.
Since the end of the fifth century BC business relationships between the Etruscans north and the Greek south will be prosperous, as evidenced by the many necropolis spread out the perimeter of the old town.
With the arrival of the Romans and the construction of the Via Popilia (which linked Capua to Reggio Calabria) Eburum became an important and flourishing handicraft and business center, as shown by the remains of an ancient artisan district, due to the presence of three Roman furnaces.
Virgilio wrote in the Aeneid, talking about Eboli: "... Terra Antiqua, potens armis atqve Ubere glebae, ...". Romans granted Eburum the legal status of Municipium, which demonstrates the great vitality of this center. The extremely fertile alluvial plain, whose agricultural use has always been the basis of the prosperity of this center, makes Eboli a city with strong rural traditions.
Eboli today is known for Buffalo mozzarella, produced mostly from small family run dairies; the recent opening of the Outlet Village Cilento, one of the largest shopping centres in South Italy; the Palasele , one of the largest indoor sports halls in Campania with a capacity of 8,000 seats. It has a pool of six million people within 90 minutes.
