The Ho.R.U.S. Project aims to achieve the following objectives: 1. to bring together citizens coming from the involved communities to exchange and share experience and opinions on vegetable gardens theme; 2. to sensitize citizens about establishing a direct contact with nature and satisfy one's inclination to manage one's own vegetable garden; 3. to inform certain sensitive categories of our communities, such as unemployed and retired people, workers on redundancy payment, students, etc. to employ one's free time profitably in the cultivation and the care of urban vegetable gardens; 4. to encourage social care and cultural exchange of the involved citizens; 5. to sensitize citizens in financial straits due to global crisis about increasing household income through the cultivation of a urban vegetable garden; 6. to educate new generations to typicality and periodicity of the land products and to raise their awareness about the proper management and use of urban vegetable gardens; 7. to promote self-consumption and biological feeding, supporting zero-kilometer autochthonous productions; 8. to suggest the restoring and the enhancement of degraded green areas through an agricultural restyling in the heart of the urban context. THE CITY OF SASSARI, THE URBAN VEGETABLE GARDENS - Partnership The city of Sassari intends to promote the Ho.R.U.S. Project because of its ancient tradition of urban vegetable gardens and the little attention currently paid to this topic. This project aims at placing emphasis on seven centuries of Sassari's history of vegetable gardens, which did play such an important role in the construction of the city's identity. The history of watered cultivations, as peculiar element of the city's agricultural landscape, emerges from official archives and literary sources and dates from the origin of Sassari' urban settlement up to the modern age. At the moment there are multiple-size municipal green areas in the city of Sassari that can undergo an agricultural restoration process right now, giving rise to a virtuous process which could involve private patches as well. In particular, similar projects are being undergone in a city's rest home and in a cultural centre. The Urban Vegetable Gardens topic should therefore be widened within the scope of its community aspects, besides the economic one. Partners searched: medium-size municipalities which undertake policies and measures to promote sustainable development through Urban Vegetable Gardens.
