The Municipality of Prato has always paid great attention to youth policy with avant-garde projects both at regional and national level. The symbol and the heart of the youth policy of Prato is “Officina Giovani”, a youth centre realised in the ex-slaughterhouse of the town where young people can find services and activities that meet their needs and where they can:
exercise active citizenship and active participation in activities that meet their interests• develop creativity (music, theatre, painting, etc.)
foster their autonomy and self-management• exchange experience and cooperate to carry out different projects
attend courses and improve their competencies
receive information of any kind (education, training, mobility, job research, spare time, etc.) and personal counselling
develop an intercultural attitude and contribute to a multicultural social development (Prato is nowadays a very multicultural town)Besides, great attention has been also paid to sport activities, promoted as helpful discipline for cooperation, socialisation and personal and balanced development.
Youth policies of the Municipality of Prato have been imagined as a “yard” where young people are educated. This sector of the local institution aims to offer them information and encourage their attendance to events and initiatives, supporting them in activities and events they create themselves (cultural, music and sport events) and promoting the development of youth associations. Prato, a city of 200,000 inhabitants, is equipped with offices and appropriate services, but above all know – how and experience in the field and relations with partners, including international assistance both to different figures that work in Comune di Prato at various levels (national civil service volunteers, trainees, interns, ecc). The structure of Comune di Prato ensures full performance of administrative duties and better relations with the partnership. The accreditation as coordinating organisation also guarantees a better support for EVS volunteers throught the security guard projects. The Municipality of Prato has always paid great attention to youth policy with avant-garde projects both at regional and national level. The symbol and heart of Prato’s youth policy is Officina Giovani where young people can:- exercise active citizenship and active participation in activities that meet their interests- develop creativity (music, theatre, painting, etc.)- foster their autonomy and self-management- exchange experience and cooperate to carry out different projects- attend courses and improve their competencies- receive information of any kind (education, training, mobility, job research, spare time, etc.) and personal counselling- develop an intercultural attitude and contribute to a multicultural social development (Prato is nowadays a very multicultural town)Officina Giovani is situated in the ex-slaughterhouse, a 2,500 squared metres area, very close to the centre town, completely renovated in 1998 and transformed into a multi-purpose centre of great attraction for young people. The Youth town is a kind of “yard” of socio-cultural development, where youth can find services and information as well as participate actively in projects and initiatives of their interest. The Youth Town provides both continuous services (which are available in any period) and extraordinary/periodic activities (which are the results of projects promoted by the Municipality or other youth organisations). To some extent, the effectiveness of such Youth policy lays in the chance to mix in the same area institutional services (information, counselling, etc) together with active and informal participation of young people to the realisation of the services as well as of other activities. That is why the Youth Town is a real symbol for young people in Prato: an open and flexible structure, working in cooperation with the community and moving together with it.
